How to Search and Download Subtitles in Picture-in-Picture – OpenSubtitles API Key Setup Guide

#subtitles#OpenSubtitles#SubDL#Chrome extension#picture-in-picture#subtitle download#API Key#DualPiP

How can I quickly find and add subtitles to any movie or video?

DualPiP lets you search, download, and load subtitles directly inside a picture-in-picture player — no tab switching, no manual file downloads. Type a movie title or IMDb ID, pick a language, and the subtitles are applied to your video instantly.

The traditional workflow means opening OpenSubtitles in another tab, searching for your movie, downloading a ZIP file, extracting it, and manually loading the SRT file. DualPiP integrates this entire process into the PiP player's subtitle menu. Click "Search Subtitles" and you're done.

This guide also includes step-by-step instructions for registering an OpenSubtitles API Key and a SubDL API Key so you can configure custom subtitle sources for even better results.

How do I search and download subtitles in the PiP player?

After installing DualPiP and signing in, follow these steps on any video site:

  1. Click the DualPiP icon to enter picture-in-picture mode
  2. Click the subtitle button (CC icon) on the bottom control bar
  3. Select "Search Subtitles" from the menu
  4. Enter a movie title or IMDb/TMDb ID and choose a language
  5. Click search, then click download on any result
  6. The subtitle is automatically parsed and applied to the PiP player

DualPiP tries to auto-detect the movie title from the page. If the auto-detected title is inaccurate, enter the IMDb ID manually — you can find it in the movie's URL on imdb.com (format: tt6723592). This is the most precise search method.

What search input types are supported?

DualPiP automatically detects your input format and uses the appropriate search strategy:

Input TypeExampleHow It Works
Movie titleTenetLooks up the title on TMDB first, then searches for subtitles
IMDb IDtt6723592Direct match — highest accuracy
TMDb ID577922Direct match — same accuracy as IMDb ID

Results are sorted by download count. HD badges indicate subtitles sourced from high-definition releases. Trusted means uploaded by verified contributors. AI or MT indicates machine-translated subtitles.

Which subtitle sources are available?

DualPiP supports three subtitle sources, switchable from a dropdown in the search panel:

SourceAPI Key RequiredPro RequiredFeatures
DualPiP Built-inNoNoDefault source, free search, 2 downloads per day
OpenSubtitlesYesYesWorld's largest subtitle database, 60+ languages, fuzzy title search
SubDLYesYesHigh-quality source, complements OpenSubtitles

Free users can search and download using the DualPiP built-in source. For a larger subtitle library or more flexible fuzzy title matching, configure an OpenSubtitles or SubDL API Key (requires Pro membership).

How does DualPiP compare to standalone subtitle extensions?

Standalone subtitle extensions like Substital or the OpenSubtitles extension overlay subtitles on the original webpage, which often conflicts with the site's own player controls and layout. DualPiP renders subtitles in an independent picture-in-picture window, keeping the original page untouched.

How to register for an OpenSubtitles API Key

OpenSubtitles is the world's largest open subtitle database with movies and TV shows in over 60 languages. To use OpenSubtitles as a custom subtitle source in DualPiP, you need to register an account and create an API Key.

Step 1: Create an OpenSubtitles account

  1. Go to opensubtitles.com and click Sign Up in the top right
  2. Enter your email and a password (must include upper and lowercase letters plus numbers, 8+ characters)
  3. Verify your email: check your inbox and click the confirmation link

If you had an account on the old opensubtitles.org site, you can import it from the login page.

Step 2: Create an API Consumer

  1. After logging in, click your avatar icon in the top right
  2. Select API consumers from the dropdown menu
  3. Click the NEW CONSUMER button
  4. Fill in the following fields:
FieldValueNote
NameDualPiP (or any name)Identifies your application
DescriptionSubtitle search for DualPiPBrief description of the use case
Allow anonymoustrueMust be true — otherwise searches will fail
Under developmentfalseSet to false for production use
Callback URLLeave emptyNot required
  1. Click Save — the system generates your API Key
  2. Copy the generated API Key

Step 3: Configure in DualPiP

  1. Right-click the DualPiP extension icon → select "Options"
  2. Choose "Subtitle Search" in the left navigation
  3. Paste your API Key into the OpenSubtitles field and click Save

A free OpenSubtitles account includes 100 downloads per day. Your API Key is stored locally in your browser and sent directly to the OpenSubtitles API — it never passes through DualPiP servers.

How to get a SubDL API Key

SubDL is another high-quality subtitle source. Some movies have subtitle versions on SubDL that aren't available on OpenSubtitles. The SubDL API Key setup is simpler than OpenSubtitles.

Register and get your API Key

  1. Go to subdl.com and sign up or log in
  2. Navigate to your Profile page
  3. Find the API Key section and click Copy API Code

Configure in DualPiP

  1. Open DualPiP options (right-click extension icon → Options)
  2. On the "Subtitle Search" page, paste your API Key into the SubDL field and click Save

SubDL supports searching by movie name, IMDb ID, or TMDb ID, with filtering by language, type (movie/TV), season, and episode.

How do I import local subtitle files?

Select "Import Subtitle" from the PiP subtitle menu and choose a local file. DualPiP supports:

FormatDescription
SRTMost common subtitle format
VTTWeb video standard subtitle format
ASS/SSAAdvanced subtitle format with styling
SUBLegacy subtitle format

If the subtitle timing is off, use keyboard shortcuts to adjust: Z shifts 0.5s earlier, X shifts 0.5s later, R resets to original timing.

Are downloaded subtitles cached?

DualPiP automatically caches downloaded subtitles based on the page URL. If you close the PiP window and reopen it, previously downloaded subtitles are available immediately without re-searching.

When searching the same movie again, already-downloaded subtitles show a ✓ checkmark in the results. Your language preference and source selection are also remembered.

Can I use subtitle search with bilingual translation?

Yes. Downloaded subtitles load as the primary language in the PiP player. Turn on DualPiP's translation feature to get real-time translation into your target language, creating bilingual subtitles.

For example: search for English subtitles → enable translation to Spanish → the PiP window shows both English and Spanish simultaneously. This is ideal for learning languages by watching movies. For more details, see the DualPiP bilingual subtitles guide.

For intensive listening practice, try the Learning Mode with AB loop repeat and subtitle list tracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What should I do if no subtitles are found? A: Use an IMDb ID (e.g., tt6723592) instead of a title for more accurate results. If the built-in source doesn't find anything, configure an OpenSubtitles API Key in settings — OpenSubtitles has a larger database and supports fuzzy title matching.

Q: Is the OpenSubtitles API Key free? A: Yes. Register a free account at opensubtitles.com and create an API Key from the API Consumers page. Free accounts include 100 downloads per day. For higher quotas, you can purchase VIP.

Q: How do I get a SubDL API Key? A: Register at subdl.com, go to your profile, and click "Copy API Code" in the API Key section.

Q: How do I fix subtitle timing issues? A: Use keyboard shortcuts in the PiP player: Z (shift 0.5s earlier), X (shift 0.5s later), R (reset to original timing).

Q: Where is my API Key stored? Is it safe? A: API Keys are stored locally in your browser. When using custom subtitle sources, requests go directly from the extension to the API provider (OpenSubtitles or SubDL) — they never pass through DualPiP servers.

Q: Which video sites support subtitle search? A: Subtitle search works on any site where DualPiP's PiP mode is supported, including YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Coursera, TED, and more.

Install DualPiP and sign in, then enter picture-in-picture mode on any video site. Click the subtitle button to search and download subtitles. Free users get 2 downloads per day; local subtitle import is always unlimited.
