How does real-time AI caption (ASR) work, and what is the daily quota?
CaptionGo PRO includes real-time AI captions powered by speech recognition. PRO members get a daily quota via the built-in CaptionGo Cloud service. You can also bring your own Deepgram API key for unlimited usage.
What is ASR?
ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) generates real-time captions for any web video — even those without built-in subtitles. CaptionGo captures the video's audio and uses AI speech recognition to transcribe it into live captions.
How to enable ASR
- •Open any video in your browser
- •Click the CaptionGo floating button, then select Live Captions from the menu
- •Captions will appear after a brief initialization
Daily quota
Real-time AI captions are a PRO feature. PRO members receive a daily speech recognition quota through the built-in CaptionGo Cloud service.
Important notes about quota consumption:
- •The pre-download mode may consume quota slightly faster than the actual playback time, because audio segments are processed ahead of your current position to minimize latency
- •If ASR language detection is set to "Auto" and the detected language does not match the actual video language, captions may not appear while quota is still consumed. We recommend manually selecting the video language from the ASR badge in the top-right corner
Bring Your Own Key (BYOK)
For heavy users who need more than the daily quota, CaptionGo supports using your own Deepgram API key:
- •Go to Deepgram and create an account — new accounts receive $200 in free credits (no credit card required)
- •In the Deepgram Console, go to Settings → API Keys → Create a New API Key
- •Copy the API key immediately (Deepgram does not show the full key again after leaving the page)
- •In CaptionGo's Options → Real-Time Captions settings, add Deepgram as a provider and paste the API key
With your own key, there are no daily limits — usage is billed directly to your Deepgram account.
Supported languages
CaptionGo Cloud (Deepgram) supports 22+ languages with automatic language detection. For best results, manually select the video's language from the ASR panel.
Troubleshooting
- •Captions not appearing? Try manually selecting the video language instead of using auto-detection
- •Quota running out quickly? Pre-download mode processes audio ahead of playback. Switch to real-time mode in settings if you want to conserve quota
- •ASR button grayed out? Ensure you are signed in and have an active PRO membership
